Our Story

Leliebloem House: A legacy of compassion and care for children in need since 1868.

A group of children are gathered in a room, sitting on mats with meals in front of them. One child in the foreground appears to be looking directly at the camera, while the others are engaged in their own activities or conversations. The room has an open ceiling and wall, allowing light to come through.

A group of young children are gathered outside a rustic wooden structure with a makeshift thatched roof. They are standing on a narrow path beside a lush green field. Some children are dressed in colorful shirts, and one boy is wearing a bright orange cap. The mood appears lighthearted and playful, with some children smiling and others looking curiously at the camera.

Our Location

Leliebloem House was founded as a House of Mercy by Bishop Gray in 1868. Archdeacon Lightfoot, gave a sum of money for the purpose of establishing a refuge for fallen women in Plein Street Cape Town. In 1886, House of Mercy was resettled on a site on the Leliebloem House Estate (where the present day Holiday Inn is), made possible by through the generosity of the Society of St John the Evangelist.

Today it is a registered NGO, (NPO Number: 003 227) that operates as a Residential Children’s Home for 60 children, aged 4 years to 18 years old. These children are from troubled families and backgrounds and with no consideration of race, colour or creed. The organization offers the least restrictive environment for children who are placed via the children’s courts.

Even though the Residential Care is the core business of Leliebloem House, we work intensively within these children’s communities and families to improve the circumstances from which they were removed. Leliebloem House has numerous programs that are well implemented and are looked to as “best practice models”.

We strive to share our experiences from piloting to the running of these programs with colleagues in the child and youth care field. This is done by not only being available to them for knowledge sharing through site visits and telephonic support, but also by offering training and information sessions.

Our Objectives are: to provide each child access to appropriate developmental care; to empower, support and facfilitate capacity building within families and community; and to impart knowledge and skills to families to achieve their goals.

Three children are interacting in an environment constructed with corrugated metal sheets and wooden planks. Two of the children are standing on one side of the metal barrier, while a third child, holding a piece of paper, looks over from the other side. The setting appears to be makeshift, possibly an informal settlement or construction site.
